The BJP swept the Uttar Pradesh civic polls on 01 December, 2017 pocketing 14 of the 16 mayoral seats. The Congress faced the embarrassment of losing in its bastion Amethi, the Lok Sabha constituency of its vice-president Rahul Gandhi. BSP won the mayoral posts in western U.P.’s Aligarh and Meerut towns.

The BJP won municipal corporation seats (mayors) in Varanasi, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Kanpur, Mathura and Gorakhpur. It also won Agra, Firozabad, Ghaziabad, Moradabad, Jhansi, Allahabad, Bareilly and Saharanpur.

The Congress was left embarrassed in its bastion Amethi and Rae Bareli. The BJP won the Amethi Nagar Panchayat chairman’s post, while the Nagar Palika Parishad chairman post in Jais was won by the SP and the BJP, with the Congress languishing in the fourth spot in this seat. In Rae Bareli, the Congress managed to win the Nagar Palika Parishad seat but failed to win a single out of the nine Nagar Panchayat chairman posts.

Union Finance Minister Shri Arun Jaitley said that the results reaffirmed people’s support for the GST which has made doing business easier for traders.

UP CM Yogi Adityanath described it as a historic win. He attributed the victory to PM Shri Narendra Modi’s vision and BJP President Shri Amit Shah’s guidance. The State voted in three phases on November 22, 26 and 29 and the counting of ballots was held under tight security cover and CCTV surveillance at 334 centres in district and tehsil headquarters, the State election commission said.
