BJP forms its first-ever government; Mohan Charan Majhi takes oath as new CM

Senior BJP tribal leader and four-time MLA Shri Mohan Charan Majhi took oath as the new Chief Minister of Odisha at a grand event attended by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, BJP National President and Union Health Minister

Shri JP Nadda, Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh, Union Home & Cooperation Minister Shri Amit Shah, Union Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari, BJP State President Shri Manmohan Samal, several Union Ministers- Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Shri Bhupender Yadav, Shri Jual Oram and Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Chief Ministers of various States and senior BJP leaders on 12 June 2024.

The mega oath-taking ceremony took place at the jam-packed Janata Maidan in the capital city of Bhubaneswar. Along with Shri Majhi, BJP leaders Shri KV Singh Deo and Smt. Pravati Parida were also sworn-in as Deputy Chief Ministers of the state. Notably, Shri Mohan Charan Majhi is BJP’s first Chief Minister in the state.
Apart from this, Shri Suresh Pujari, Shri Prithviraj Harichandan, Dr. Mukesh Mahaling, Shri Bibhuti Bhusan Jena and Dr Krushna Chandra Mohapatra also took oath as cabinet ministers in the new government.

Odisha Governor Hon’ble Shri Raghubar Das administered the oath of office to the CM, Deputy CMs and other Ministers. The oath taking ceremony was also attended by former Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik. After his arriving at the event, Shri Patnaik was welcomed by all the senior BJP leaders.

Soon after the swearing-in ceremony concluded, PM Shri Narendra Modi took to X and congratulated Shri Mohan Charan Majhi for taking up oath as the Chief Minister. “It’s a historic day in Odisha! With the blessings of my sisters and brothers of Odisha, @BJP4Odisha is forming its first-ever government in the state,” he said.
“I attended the swearing-in ceremony in Bhubaneswar. Congratulations to Shri Mohan Charan Majhi on taking oath as CM and to Shri Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo as well as Smt. Pravati Parida on taking oath as Deputy CMs. Congratulations also to the others who took oath as Ministers,” the Prime Minister added.

Union Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh said, “Attended the oath-taking ceremony of Shri @mohanmajhi_BJP and his ministerial team. History has been scripted in Odisha as the BJP has come to power in the state for the first time.

BJP stormed to power in Odisha

The BJP stormed to power in the recently-concluded Assembly elections, ending 24 years of rule of the Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal (BJD) by securing 78 of 147 seats with a vote share of 40.07 per cent. While the BJD got 51 seats, Congress secured 14, CPI(M) won one seat and Independents got three.

The counting of votes is being held in 70 centres. This time, over 2.5 crore voters exercised their franchise, with a turnout of 74.44 per cent, up from 2019. Gender-wise, 75.55 per cent of women and 73.37 per cent of men voted in the 2024 state election.

The state witnessed a high-voltage campaign led by Shri PM Shri Narendra Modi himself addressing 10 poll rallies besides holding two road shows in Bhubaneswar and Puri. The BJP central leaders held at least 245 election meetings across the state.
Apart from Shri Modi, top party leaders like Shri JP Nadda, Shri Rajnath Singh, Shri Amit Shah, Shri Nitin Gadkari and others campaigned in the assembly election.
