Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan was sworn in as Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh by Governor Shri Lalji Tandon at a ceremony at the Raj Bhawan in Bhopal on 23 March, 2020. This is the fourth time Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan has been administered the oath of office as CM.

The ceremony was held amid a Coronavirus-induced lockdown in the state resulting in no invitations for party leaders or the press.

Earlier, Shri Chouhan was elected the leader of the BJP legislature party at a meeting of MLAs held at the state BJP headquarters on 23 March evening. Shri Chouhan’s name was proposed by outgoing leader of opposition Shri Gopal Bhargava and supported by former minister Shri Narottam Mishra, Smt. Meena Singh, and Shri Gopilal Jatav. The entire proceedings were relayed via video conferencing to the BJP headquarters in New Delhi from where Vice-President and State-In-Charge Dr. Vinay Sahasrabuddhe and General Secretary Shri Arun Singh who had been appointed as observer for the process, joined in.

Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan is the 32nd Chief Minister of the state. He represents Budhni constituency in Sehore district.

Outgoing CM Shri Kamal Nath was present at the ceremony too. Shri Kamal Nath resigned on March 20 after 22 Congress MLAs resigned and joined the BJP, pushing his government into a minority.

Soon after being administered the oath, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that normally he would have sought the blessings of his seniors by going to them but these are exceptional circumstances under which he has taken oath as the state has been hit by the Coronavirus too, and as a result would seek their blessings by folding his hands from the dais.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi took to the Twitter to congratulate BJP leader Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh after the collapse of the Congress government in the state.

“Congratulations to Shri @ChouhanShivraj Ji on taking oath as CM of Madhya Pradesh. He is an able and experienced administrator who is extremely passionate about MP’s development. Best wishes to him for taking the state to new heights of progress,” the Prime Minister said.

Congratulating MP CM Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, BJP National President Shri J P Nadda said BJP has once again received the opportunity to serve the people of Madhya Pradesh. Our resolve is development of all people of the country under the leadership of PM Shri Modi. We’ll make up for all the shortfalls which took place, towards serving people, during the last 15 months in MP.
