Karpoori Thakur conferred nation’s highest honour, Bharat Ratna

Former Chief Minister of Bihar Karpoori Thakur will be conferred the nation’s highest honour, Bharat Ratna, posthumously by the President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu. He will be conferred the award after 35 years of his death — Karpoori Thakur passed away on February 17, 1988.

Shri Thakur was born into a poor family to Gokul Thakur and Ramdulari Devi. His ascent from modest beginnings in Pitaunjhia hamlet, which is now known as Karpoorii Gramme, to the post of the Chief Minister of Bihar is evidence of his fortitude and commitment to public service. His tenure as the Chief Minister of Bihar during the 1970s was groundbreaking, particularly for the underprivileged segments of the population.

PM expresses happiness

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi expressed happiness over the decision of Bharat Ratna given to pioneer of social justice, Shri Karpoori Thakur posthumously.
Shri Modi said on the the occasion of Karpoori Thakur’s birth centenary, this decision will make the countrymen proud. His unwavering commitment and visionary leadership for the upliftment of the backward and the deprived has left an indelible mark on the socio-political scenario of India.
