Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon passes away at 85

Madhya Pradesh Governor Shri Lalji Tandon passed away on July 21, 2020 morning after suffering from multiple organ failures. He was 85. The last rights of Shri Tandon were performed at 4:30 pm at Gullala Ghat in Lucknow on the same day. Union Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh, UP Governor Smt. Anandiben Patel, MP Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, UP CM Yogi Adityanath, MP BJP State President Shri V.D Sharma and UP Deputy CM Dr. Dinesh Sharma paid their last respects to Shri Lalji Tandon in Lucknow and took part in his funeral.

Uttar Pradesh government has announced three-day state mourning as a mark of respect to Shri Tandon who died in office as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh. Likewise, MP Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan said Madhya Pradesh would observe five-day mourning from July 21, during which no entertainment programmes would be held.
Born on April 12, 1935, Shri Tandon was a member of the UP Legislature Council for two terms and a member of the Legislative Assembly thrice. He has served as a Minister in the State government. A close confidant of former PM Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Shri Lalji Tandon was chosen by the Party to represent Lucknow in the Lok Sabha after Vajpayee Ji. He was elected to the 15th Lok Sabha from Lucknow in 2009, and later appointed the Governor of Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.

Leaders cutting across party lines have condoled Shri Tandon’s death. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, other central ministers, and chief ministers also expressed shock and paid tributes to Shri Tandon.

Extending his condolences, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi tweeted, “Shri Lalji Tandon will be remembered for his untiring efforts to serve society. He played a key role in strengthening the BJP in Uttar Pradesh. He made a mark as an effective administrator, always giving importance to public welfare. Anguished by his passing away”.

The PM said, “Shri Lalji Tandon was well-versed with constitutional matters. He enjoyed a long and close association with beloved Atal Ji. In this hour of grief, my condolences to the family and well-wishers of Shri Tandon. Om Shanti.”

BJP National President Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda in his condolence message said, “I am shocked at the demise of Madhya Pradesh Governor and senior BJP leader Shri Lalji Tandon. He devoted his entire life to the service of the nation. This is an irreparable loss for the BJP. May God bless the saintly soul and give strength to the bereaved family to bear the loss. Om Shanti”.

Paying tributes to the veteran BJP leader Union Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh said, ‘I got the opportunity to work with Shri Lalji Tandon for a long period”.

He said, “The news of the demise of Madhya Pradesh Governor and one of the tallest personalities of Uttar Pradesh Shri Lalji Tandon is very painful. With Tandanji I had the opportunity to work for a long time. His long public life has been devoted to the service of the public and he has left a distinct mark in his work”.

Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah condoling the demise of Shri Lalji Tandon said, “I am deeply saddened by the demise of Shri Lalji Tandon, the senior BJP leader and the Governor of Madhya Pradesh. Shri Tandon’s entire life was devoted to public service and he played a very important role in the expansion of the organization in Uttar Pradesh.”
“As a public servant, Shri Lalji Tandon ji has left a deep impression on Indian politics. His death is an irreparable loss for the country and the BJP. I pray to God for the peace of the departed soul and express my condolences to his family. Om shanti shanti shanti” MP Chief Minister Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan said, “Shri Tandon was a symbol of uprightness in public life. As a Governor, he always gave direction and inspiration in public interest”.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the demise of Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon. The state government has announced a three-day state mourning as a mark of respect to the departed leader. In a statement, the Chief Minister said that Lucknow has lost its life and the country has lost a popular leader.
