Modi’s unique idea for celebration of Hedgewar Jayanti

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s unique and innovative ideas possess the strength to turn a simple event into a special one. One such event took place in 1981-82 on the occasion of Gudi Padwa which is also the birth anniversary of RSS founder Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. Shri Naresh Shah (Gopal), an RSS Karyakarta from Gujarat narrates how Shri Modi’s unique idea for this celebration turned out to be an emotional moment for the Swayamsevaks.

RSS celebrates 6 festivals and one such festival is Gudi Padwa which falls on the first day of the first month of Hindu Calendar. It is also the birth anniversary of Dr. Hedgewar. Shri Narendra Modi suggested a unique celebration for this event, Shri Shah recalls.

Shri Narendra Modi suggested to keep the hall dark by switching off the light where the event was celebrated. He then asked the Swayamsevaks to be silent throughout the program. His idea was that the only light in the hall should illuminate the picture of Dr Hedgewar on the stage. An audio cassette of the recording of the last speech of Dr Hedgewar in 1940 was available with him. Shri Modi said that this audio recording will be played in the program.

According to Shah, this speech was only a recording of Dr Hedgewar’s last speech from 1940, but the Swayamsevaks present there felt as if they were listening to the speech live. During the program there was pin-drop silence and the effect of the lights on Dr Hedgewar’s picture in the hall created an aura which made the Swayamsevaks feel like Dr Hedgewar was among them. It was an emotional moment for the Swayamsevaks to attend such an event and they got inspired by this celebration a lot.

PM Shri Narendra Modi had the vision of organizing programs of the RSS through innovative ideas right from his early days. His suggestions often turned an ordinary program into a memorable one. His style of functioning continued even when he became the Chief Minister of Gujarat and it continues even now when he is the Prime Minister of this country.
