Prime Minister’s Opening remarks at the Virtual G20 Leaders’ Summit

| Published on:

Your Highnesses,
Excellencies,
Namaskar!

I express my gratitude to all of you for accepting my invitation and joining this summit today. On behalf of 140 crore Indians, you all are heartily welcomed.

Friends,

I remember the moment when my friend, the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, handed me the ceremonial gavel on November 16 last year. At that time, I had said that together we will make the G20 inclusive, ambitious, action-oriented and decisive. Over the past year, together we have realized that vision. Together we have taken G-20 to new heights.

Amidst a world fraught with distrust and challenges, it is mutual trust that binds us, connects us to each other.

In this one year, we have believed in “One Earth, One Family, One Future”. And, we have shown unity and cooperation beyond controversies.

I can never forget that moment when all of us in Delhi unanimously welcomed the African Union to the G-20.

The message of inclusivity that G-20 has given to the whole world is unprecedented. v It is a matter of pride for India that Africa has got a voice during its Presidency.

In this one year, the whole world has also heard the echo of the Global South in G-20.

In the Voice of Global South Summit last week, about 130 countries have wholeheartedly appreciated the decisions taken at the New Delhi G-20 Summit.

The G-20 has emphasized the adoption of a human-centric approach while supporting innovation and digital technology. The G-20 has renewed faith in multilateralism.

Together we have given direction to multilateral development banks and global governance reforms.

And along with these, during the Presidency of India, G-20 has got the recognition of People’s 20.

Crores of ordinary citizens of India joined G-20, and celebrated it as a festival.

Your Highnesses,
Excellencies,

When I had proposed this virtual summit, there was no forecast of what the global situation would be today. Recent months have brought forth new challenges. The insecurity and instability in the West Asia region, concerns us all. Our coming together today is a sign that we are sensitive to all these issues and stand together to resolve them.

We believe that terrorism is unacceptable to all of us.

The death of civilians, wherever they may be, is condemnable.

We welcome the news of the release of hostages today, and hope for the swift release of all hostages. Ensuring the timely and continuous delivery of humanitarian aid is imperative. It is also crucial to ensure that the conflict between Israel and Hamas, does not take on any kind of regional form.

The clouds of crises that we are witnessing today, as One Family, we possess the strength to work towards peace.

From the point of view of human welfare, we can strengthen our voice against terror and violence, and for humanity.

Today, India is prepared to walk together shoulder to shoulder, to meet the expectations of the world and of humanity.

Friends,

The 21st century world will have to give top priority to the concerns of the Global South moving forward.

The countries of the Global South are going through many difficulties for which they are not responsible.

In this context, the need of the hour is to give our full support to the development agenda.

It is important that reforms are brought in the global economic and governance structures to make them bigger, better, effective, representative and future ready.

Ensuring timely and affordable assistance to countries in need. Implement the action plan adopted to accelerate the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Friends,

Our Aspirational District Program stands as a notable example of progress in the SDGs at the local level in India. I invite the G-20 countries and the Global South to examine the Aspirational District Programme, and witness the transformative impact it has had on the lives of 25 crore people in India.

Friends,

At the New Delhi Summit, a decision was made to establish a Digital Public Infrastructure Repository, and I am pleased to announce its completion. Over 50 DPIs from 16 countries have been incorporated into this repository. To facilitate the implementation of DPIs in Global South nations, I propose the creation of a Social Impact Fund. On India’s behalf, I also announce an initial contribution of 25 million dollars to this fund and hope for your participation in this initiative.

In the era of Artificial Intelligence, there is a need to use technology in a responsible manner. There is growing concern about the negative use of A.I all over the world.

India firmly believes that we should work together on global regulation of A.I.

We have to move forward, understanding the seriousness of how dangerous DeepFake is, for society, for the individual.

We desire that A.I. should reach the people, and it must be safe for the society.

With this approach, the Global A.I. Partnership Summit is being hosted in India next month.

And I believe all of you will cooperate in this as well.

Friends,

At the New Delhi Summit, I had talked about green credit regarding environmental protection.

You know that in India we have started it. Through the Global Biofuels Alliance launched in New Delhi, we are reducing carbon as well as promoting the development of alternative fuels.

The G-20 has recognized mission LiFE, i.e. Lifestyle for Environment, for a pro-planet approach; called for taking renewable energy three times by 2030; shown commitment towards clean hydrogen; recognized the need to take climate finance from billions to trillions.

In a few days, during the COP-28 which will be held in the UAE, concrete steps need to be taken on all these initiatives.

Friends,

A new working group on women empowerment has also been formed.

In this context, I am very happy to share that India has taken a historic decision in the first session of its new Parliament House.

To strengthen women-led development, we have decided for 33% reservation for women in Parliament and state legislative assemblies.

Friends,

I end my statement here.

Nitin Gadkari Inaugurates the 8th India Water Impact Summit (IWIS) in New Delhi

| Published on:

Shri Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India, inaugurated the 8th Edition of the India Water Impact Summit (IWIS) on November 22, 2023, at the Dr Ambedkar International Centre in New Delhi. The summit, organized by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and the Center for Ganga River Basin Management and Studies (cGanga), spans three days from November 22 to 24, 2023.

The theme of IWIS 2023 is ‘Development vis-à-vis Land, Water and Rivers,’ aimed at uniting scientific experts, stakeholders, and government representatives to address dynamic challenges and opportunities in India’s water sector.

Among the distinguished speakers were Ms Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary, DoWR, RD & GR, Shri G. Asok Kumar, DG-NMCG, Shri Igor Papič, Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation from the Republic of Slovenia, Dr. Vinod Tare, Founding head of cGanga and Professor at IIT Kanpur, and Shri Sanmit Ahuja (cGanga).

The Union Minister of Ministry of Roads, Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari, delivered a compelling address highlighting three pivotal pillars of society—ethics, ecology and environment, and economics—underscoring their integral role in shaping a sustainable future. He emphasized the importance of ecological initiatives, stressing that good experiments and technology are readily available. He outlined two significant philosophies for the future—conversion of knowledge into wealth through innovation, entrepreneurship, science, technology, research skills, and successful management practices, and the conversion of waste into wealth, promoting the idea that no material or person is waste. Addressing scientists, Union Minister urged them to focus on proven technologies, economic viability, availability of raw materials, and marketability of finished products. He provided examples, such as the potential development of the Zuari river in Goa, where a large gallery is being constructed that will boost tourism and generate revenue.

Igor Papič, the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation from the Republic of Slovenia, advocated for a holistic approach to technology development for societal benefit. He highlighted the critical need to incorporate social science and humanities to address potential misuse cases, advocating for the active participation of the entire society in tech development. Recognizing water management as a complex problem demanding new technological innovation, he underscored the significance of water as a fundamental natural resource. He emphasized its pivotal role in the sustainable management of society, influencing both environmental and social aspects. Shri Papič drew attention to the global challenges facing the world—climate change, water scarcity, and biodiversity loss.

In addressing the complex challenges of water security in India, Ms Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary -Department of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation, highlighted key issues and strategies within water security and management. She said that the government has made substantial investments in drinking water and sanitation through flagship programs like the Jal Jeevan Mission and Swachh Bharat Mission. “However, sustaining these investments poses a significant challenge, especially given that 60% of the drinking water systems established by the Jal Jeevan Mission rely on groundwater”, she added. Climate change exacerbates these issues, impacting the water cycle with extreme precipitation and prolonged dry spells in various regions. To address these challenges, Ms Mukherjee outlined three key areas of focus. Firstly, efforts to improve river health to ensure rivers can sustain riverine systems, provide water for irrigation and drinking, and support the economy. Secondly, there is a focus on enhancing water use efficiency in agriculture. Thirdly, managing storage involves not only dams and reservoirs but also sedimentation management and local-level storage, such as ponds, pokhars, and groundwater.

Addressing the distinguished audience at the annual summit, Shri G. Asok Kumar, the Director General -National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), reiterated Namami Gange’s unwavering commitment to its mandate over the years. He said that NMCG has steadfastly delivered on its mandate, focusing on cleaning and rejuvenating the Ganga and its tributaries. Shri G. Asok Kumar emphasized the invaluable lessons learned from NMCG’s implementation strategies, which are now becoming guiding principles for other cities facing similar challenges.

Reflecting on the environmental changes witnessed over the last century, including increased pollution, industrialization, and urbanization leading to the degradation of rivers and the drying up of streams, Shri G. Asok Kumar highlighted the Ganga’s unique significance as the holiest of rivers. In response, NMCG launched a concentrated effort to rejuvenate the Ganga with a committed budget of 40 thousand crores. Shri G. Asok Kumar’s address emphasized NMCG’s role as a torchbearer in the comprehensive rejuvenation of rivers. The Namami Gange’s dedication and lessons learned from its initiatives are now serving as a blueprint for other regions grappling with similar environmental challenges.

With United Nations recognition on December 13, 2022, marking a momentous occasion for the organization, Shri Kumar said that it is a testament to NMCG’s unwavering commitment and successful delivery of its mandated objectives over the years. He added that NMCG’s dedication to the cause of cleaning and revitalizing rivers has been executed with precision. The organization has implemented advanced technologies, ensuring that treated water does not seep into rivers. Furthermore, he said that this achievement is a result of NMCG’s innovative River Basin Management Plan, guided by the principles of Nirmal (clean), Aviral (continuous flow), Gyan (knowledge), and Jan (public participation). In 2019, the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi introduced a new pillar, Arth Ganga, underlining the need to connect rivers and people through economic bridges. Shri Kumar said that this addition transformed NMCG from a pure river management program into a comprehensive river-people connect initiative.

With the MoU signed by former President of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind with the Republic of Slovenia in 2019, NMCG entered into a partnership aimed at facilitating flood mapping and other technical endeavors within the Ganga basin, bringing together expertise from both nations to address complex challenges in river management. Shri Kumar said that NMCG’s endeavors in expanding its reach to the tributaries and forging international collaborations exemplify its commitment to adopting innovative and effective strategies.

Dr Vinod Tare, Founding head of cGanga and Professor at IIT Kanpur, spoke at length about the origin and the visionary objectives of the summit that has continued to evolve over the years. Dr Tare emphasized the concept of Samarth Ganga, illustrating the river’s inherent ability to remain intact and serve humanity. He advocated for the preservation of the river’s flow, introducing the term Aviral Ganga, emphasizing the need to leave some water for the river’s well-being. Underlining the success of these initiatives, Dr Tare informed that the Government of India has now embarked on projects to address water challenges in other river basins, including Narmada, Kaveri, and Mandakini. These projects, backed by a high critical mass, signal a promising future for sustainable water management.

In a momentous prelude to the International Water Innovation Summit 2023 (IWIS) and the 1st CITIS Summit, a special session titled “River Cities Alliance – A Global Step Forward (GRCA) was also held and was attended by delegates from Ethiopia, Denmark, Mexico, the Federal Republic of Germany, Bhutan, United Kingdom, Nepal and Japan. Addressing the session, Shri G. Asok Kumar, DG-NMCG, announced the upcoming launch of the Global River Cities Alliance (GRCA) in COP28 on December 10, 2023, in Dubai. He emphasized the collaborative initiative’s global mission to unite cities and leverage joint efforts for transforming rivers into catalysts for urban water management. He highlighted NMCG’s significant achievements in pollution abatement, effective river basin management, and the enhancement of people-river connectivity and biodiversity in the Ganga. Recognizing the Ganga’s cultural significance as a lifeline for 40% of India’s population, Shri Kumar underscored NMCG’s pivotal role in cultural preservation and ecological restoration. He outlined NMCG’s recent efforts, expanding collaborative initiatives to 140 rivers, and highlighted the launch of the Global Cities Alliance, signaling a strategic move towards a more sustainable future. He emphasized the government’s commitment to address urban water challenges through initiatives like Catch the Rain and the Urban River Management Plan, aiming to rejuvenate water bodies and improve water quality.

Day 1 of IWIS 2023 also held sessions on ‘Samarth Ganga and Productive Land- I’ and “Lifetsyle for & Economics of Rivers-I.

Concurrently, Day 1 of CITIS, technology pitches were presented to the evaluation panel, complemented by the inauguration and walkthrough of the exhibition. Notably, the Jalaj Stall emerged as a central attraction, capturing the attention and enthusiasm of attendees keen to explore innovative water solutions. EPFO adds 17.21 lakh net members during the month of September 2023

| Published on:

EPFO’s provisional payroll data released today highlights that EPFO has added 17.21 lakh net members in the month of September, 2023. Month-on-month comparison of payroll data shows an increase of 21,475 net members over the previous month of August 2023. Year-on-year comparison of payroll data reflects an increase of 38,262 net members over the previous year of September, 2022.

The data indicates that around 8.92 lakh new members have enrolled during September, 2023. Among these newly joined members, the age-group of 18-25 years constitutes 58.92% of total new members added during the month. This demonstrates that majority of the members joining organised sector workforce of the country are youth, who are mostly first-time job seekers.

Payroll data shows that approximately 11.93 lakh members exited but rejoined EPFO. These members switched their jobs and re-joined the establishments covered under the ambit of EPFO and opted to transfer their accumulations instead of applying for final settlement thus, extending their social security protection. As compared to the previous month, number of exits have decreased by 12.17% with 3.64 lakh exits in the month of September, 2023. The data also highlights that the number of members exiting EPFO has been declining since June, 2023.

Gender-wise analysis of payroll data represents that out of the total 8.92 lakh new members added during the month, around 2.26 lakh are new female members, joining EPFO for the first time. Also, the net female member addition during the month stood at around 3.30 lakh.

State-wise analysis of payroll data denotes that net member addition is highest in the 5 states of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Gujarat and Haryana. These states constitute around 57.42% of net member addition, adding a total of 9.88 lakh members during the month. Of all the states, Maharashtra is leading by adding 20.42% of net members during the month.

Month-on-month comparison of industry-wise data displays significant growth in the members working in establishments engaged in the Sugar industry, courier services, iron and steel, hospitals, travel agencies etc. Of the total net membership, around 41.46% addition is from expert services (consisting of manpower suppliers, normal contractors, security services, miscellaneous activities etc.).

The above payroll data is provisional since the data generation is a continuous exercise, as updating employee record is a continuous process. The previous data hence gets updated every month. From the month of April-2018, EPFO has been releasing payroll data covering the period September, 2017 onwards. In monthly payroll data, the count of members joining EPFO for the first time through Aadhaar validated Universal Account Number (UAN), existing members exiting from coverage of EPFO and those who exited but re-joining as members, is taken to arrive at net monthly payroll.

Speaking on the occasion of the completion of 75 glorious years of the Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI), Dr Jitendra Singh said, the credit for making Air Travel as a common man’s mode of travel goes to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi through visionary schemes like UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik), doubling in the number of airports, affordable airfare etc. He added that it is now a common sight at airports to see people wearing “Hawai” chappal boarding the “Hawai-Jahaz” (Air Flight).

This has been possible not only due to affordable air fare, but also the number of airports has more than doubled in the last over 9 years from 75 in 2014 to over 150 today, the Minister added.

Dwelling on the Aeronautical and Space sectors, Dr Jitendra Singh informed that after India’s totally indigenous Maiden Manned Mission Gaganyaan in 2025, India will have its own Space Station by 2035 and  an indian will land on Moon in 2040.

Dr Jitendra Singh said here that Aeronautical Society of India (AeSI) has been a crucible of innovation, a platform for collaboration, and a catalyst for the growth of the aerospace industry in our country.

Dr Jitendra Singh said, India’s progress in science and technology, especially in aviation and aerospace in the past 9-10 years under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, stands as a testament to our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible. He said, after the unlocking of the Space Sector in 2020, there are now around 150 deep tech Start-Ups working in this sector from a mere 4-5 in 2014.

Dr Jitendra Singh said that as we look at the future, India is poised for even greater heights in aerospace technology, as the government remains steadfast in its support for the scientific community, providing the necessary resources and infrastructure to propel us further. The recently launched “Make in India” initiative has already begun to transform our aerospace landscape, fostering indigenous production and innovation, the Minister added.

Dr Jitendra Singh pointed out that the Indian aerospace sector has evolved significantly, and we find ourselves at the cusp of unprecedented achievements. From the successful Chandrayaan-3, Mars Orbiter Mission, Aditya L1 and coming missions from ISRO such as Gaganyaan, the indigenously developed Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, and state-of-the-art missile systems by DRDO and other related technologies by Public sectors/private industries and startups, our scientists and engineers have showcased India’s prowess on the global stage, the Minister noted. He said, all the above global scale missions are examples of “Whole of Science”, “Whole of Government” and “Whole of Society” approach.

Dr Jitendra Singh said, this International Conference cum Exhibition on “Aerospace & Aviation in 2047,” is a testament to our dedication to knowledge-sharing and collaboration. As we celebrate AeSI’s legacy and India’s progress, let us rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of excellence in science and technology and let us continue to dream big, innovate boldly, and work together to make India a leader in aerospace technology.

In conclusion, Dr Jitendra Singh extended his best wishes for the success of the conference and the continued success of the Aeronautical Society of India. May we soar to new heights, explore uncharted territories and contribute to the scientific legacy of our great nation, the Minister added.
